Derecktor – Florida: New Lift Operational
The greatly anticipated first major lift with the new mobile boat hoist was made successfully on Friday, November 9th, after a lot of hard work by both employees and contractor personnel. The yard’s new lift, a custom-built Cimolai® Mobile Boat Hoist, was fabricated in Italy and has a capacity of 820 metric tons (900 short tons). At 100′ long, 62′ wide and 79′ high, the machine is the second largest in the USA and the tallest in the world. The magnificent 55m Headship Dream, skippered by Captain Butch Vogelsang, was the gently lifted from the water and moved ashore for inspection without incident and subsequently launched the same day. Dream is only one of several 50-60m vessels scheduled for service or refit work at the Dania Beach facility in the Fall of 2012 and Spring of 2013. Our new lift allows a significant increase in the volume of work that can be undertaken and the weeks following the Dream haulout have seen a succession of large yachts — the yard presently has more large yachts blocked ashore than ever before and the schedule for Spring is nearly full…it’s going to be busy!

Derecktor – New York Busy Again
After a quiet summer the New York yard has enjoyed a busy early fall with projects performed for the New York Police Department and the US Coast Guard. There has also been good activity in the yacht market with some excellent projects being completed. Inside storage space is now fully occupied which provides on-going work through the winter months and we are pleased to welcome back Vendetta, Billy Joel’s fast commuter boat that we completed for him in 2005.
We are happy to announce that the yard was not significantly affected by Hurricane Sandy and the yard’s services are ready and available to serve vessels damaged in the storm. Please contact Gilbert Melo at gilbertm@derecktor.com.
Derecktor – New York Hires Jeff Grey
Jeff Grey joins the management team at Derecktor this year. Growing up sailing and racing on Martha’s Vineyard, Jeff learned a deep appreciation for well designed and built yachts. He went on to establish his own boatyard and boatbuilding business in Duxbury, Mass, and comes to Derecktor with a vast knowledge of the construction and repair of both power and sailing yachts. Most recently he was employed by Sparkman & Stephens of Newport, R.I. where he managed projects of all types and sizes and provided technical support for construction, systems, and rigging. He has extensive experience with all yacht systems as well as spars, rigging, and hardware both traditional and modern. We welcome Jeff to the team!

Derecktor – Florida Media Breakfast and Ribbon Cutting Event
Despite the uncertainty of weather associated with Hurricane Sandy the yard hosted a breakfast event on October 26th to celebrate the installation of its new Cimolai® 900 ton Mobile Boat Hoist. Over 250 invited guests and media representatives were on hand to enjoy a delicious breakfast and to witness the company’s longest serving employee, Vitor Quintino, cut the ribbon to officially announce the operational status of the new equipment. Commissioner Walter Duke of the City of Dania spoke to the assembly and emphasized the importance of the South Florida Marine industry to the region and he thanked Derecktor for making an investment that will have a major impact in the local community.
Derecktor – Florida’s Vitor Quintino Celebrates
40 Year Anniversary!
The ribbon cutting event provided a great opportunity to recognize the longest serving employee at the Florida yard. Vitor Quintino started with Derecktor on July 22nd 1971 and has worked continuously for the company since that time. Paul Derecktor presented Vitor with a plaque to commemorate the event and spoke of his early experiences in the yard alongside Vitor all those years ago. Congratulations Vitor and thank you for your hard work!
Fort Lauderdale Boat Show 2012
Derecktor Shipyards exhibited at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show at Bahia Mar between October 25th and 29th. This annual event is the largest in-water boat show in the world and provides the yards with an opportunity to re-connect with the global community, networking with existing customers, vendors and prospective clients. A major focus of this year’s exhibit was the announcement of the Florida yard’s new Cimolai® mobile boat lift and the introduction of a new 44m sailboat concept that would be built in New York. Derecktor Shipyards also participated in several Boat Show-related events, sponsoring both the Dockwalk crew party on the 19th and the world famous National Marine “Yachtoberfest” on the 27th. Despite some boisterous weather, this was a highly successful show and a great time was had by all … we even got a little work done!
44m Concept Sailboat Project
New York naval architects Persak & Wurmfeld and Derecktor Shipyards are proud to introduce the next generation of modern sailing yachts — performance without compromise. The hull is fast, safe and seaworthy with a highly versatile lifting keel, while the schooner rig allows for a flexible sail plan that can be optimized to a wide range of wind speeds. The result is a vessel supremely comfortable on a cruise, yet quick and aggressive on the race course. The arrangement affords accommodations for ten and includes a separate owner’s area, four guest staterooms, a full dining area and a raised salon to enjoy panoramic views.
