Derecktor Shipyards Christens Hazel N. Dukes in Honor of Civil Rights Icon
MAMARONECK, NY — Derecktor Shipyards and Paradise Express Ferry proudly announce the christening of the Hazel N. Dukes, a newly rebuilt thrill-seeking passenger vessel named in tribute to the renowned civil rights leader and President of the NAACP New York State Conference.
The christening ceremony will be held on May 6, 2025, at 4:00 PM at Derecktor Shipyards’ Mamaroneck facility, welcoming state and local officials, civic leaders, and distinguished guests to celebrate this milestone event.
The Hazel N. Dukes, bearing the striking colors of red, yellow, and black, symbolizes the spirit of Harlem—bold, resilient, and forward-looking. At 57 feet in length and 16 feet in beam, the vessel has been fully reimagined for the modern era. Powered by rebuilt Detroit Diesel 8V92 turbo engines, featuring cutting-edge Raymarine navigation technology, and equipped with advanced safety systems, the Hazel N. Dukes will deliver a safe, exhilarating, open-air experience on New York City’s historic waterways.
Redesigned by Tucker Marine and rebuilt in collaboration with Paradise Express Ferry and Derecktor Shipyards, the vessel blends modern functionality with a commitment to preserving its legacy. Structural upgrades, including a new aluminum helm station, updated electrical systems, and enhanced passenger capacity, ensure compliance with USCG regulations while offering breathtaking harbor views.
“This project reflects the spirit of partnership and innovation that defines Derecktor Shipyards,” said Erik Derecktor at Derecktor Shipyards. “It is fitting that a vessel symbolizing forward progress carries the name of Hazel N. Dukes, whose lifelong leadership continues to inspire generations.”
Hazel N. Dukes’ legacy of advocacy, education, and community empowerment has made her a pillar of Harlem and a guiding voice in the national civil rights movement. Naming the vessel in her honor pays tribute to her extraordinary impact on New York City and beyond. The Paradise Express Ferry team will use this vessel as platform to advance the development of the Harlem waterfront, educate local men and women on careers in the maritime industry and promote tourism in the culturally rich community in the heart of New York City.
Following the ceremony, guests will enjoy a reception celebrating Harlem’s enduring energy and cultural significance, as the Hazel N. Dukes embarks on its next chapter serving the communities along Manhattan’s iconic waterways.
