Derecktor – Florida: The Highlander is launched
The iconic 150′ Feadship motor-yacht The Highlander, built by de Vries in 1986 for legendary Malcolm Forbes, was long seen as one of the best-known symbols of big business, plying the east coast of the USA as a corporate yacht for Forbes magazine. Recently purchased by new owners, the vessel has recently undergone a major refit at Derecktor Florida and was finally launched on January 2nd.
Lengthened by the yard to 164′ LOA with a stern extension that incorporates an Opacmare Transformer, and respendent in the same dark green paint for which she has always been known, the vessel’s profile has, however, been softened with some deft touches by the owners and their design team. The result is a stunning melding of the original Bannenburg lines with more contemporary features that look both classic and modern at the same time. The yard replaced a significant amount of shell plating while extending the hull, and also installed Quantum zero-speed stabilizers. The paintwork was performed by Alpha One Yacht Refinishing. “This project has been a great collaboration between the owners, their design team and the shipyard,” said the yard’s project manager Jack Schneider. “It is very rewarding to see an older vessel of historical significance restored to her former glory”. |

Over the course of the year we have seen a total of thirteen main engines, thirteen reduction gears and seven generators removed and replaced on eight different vessels, each with unique access challenges that required an innovative solution to keep the costs manageable. Two versions of the boat are now offered at 36m and 44m and the profile has been developed with even sleeker Euro-styling. This bodes well for a successful and prosperous 2014. |
Derecktor – Florida: The Big Blue Update The Big Blue was towed into Derecktor Shipyard of Florida on the 22nd May 2012. She entered the yard as an ill-equipped, incompletely engineered vessel which needed some careful planning from an experienced designer and a team of professionals to take on the mammoth transformation she required to see the Owner’s dream of sailing her around the world possible, having all works completed in a more than challenging time frame. After the heli-deck was built, and the hull and sundeck paint jobs were completed in June 2013 the scaffolding was struck, the seamless execution of launching back into the water on the new Lift was undertaken; The Big Blue was back floating again, looking like a proudly Derecktor-rebuilt expedition yacht. The support of the project manager Galloway Selby to organize many facets of the extensive refit was an asset to the vessel and the Shipyard. He was always easy to communicate with and completed required tasks without bother.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the team at Derecktor’s Florida for their hard work and extensive efforts to achieve the Owner’s desire to travel the South Pacific on a self-sufficient, safe and comfortable vessel such as The Big Blue is now. We are currently anchored in South Pass, Fakarava, Tuamotus, French Polynesia, with all systems go and one very happy owner and family living onboard.” – Sincerely, Gareth Sheppard, Master
